Ramsey Celebrates the Fall with the Third Annual
Harvest Festival
The Ramsey Fine Arts Council (RFAC) hosted the
third Annual Harvest Festival last Sunday, October 16th to
benefit Crop Walk. Over 1,000 people attended this year’s festivities which
included pumpkin painting, square dancing, face painting, a recipe taste-off
and crafts for all ages. Thanks to donations from Shop Rite,
Dunkin Donuts (Rte 17 North & South – MBIF Group),
Secor
Farms and
Starbucks, over
$700 was raised for CROP Walk.
This was the second year for the pumpkin
seeding spitting and pie eating contests.
The seed spitting drew more than 75
children. The winner in the 11 and under heat was Eric Erli with an
uncontested distance of five feet. In the 12 and over group, Brendon Perry
set a new record with a distance of nine feet. The pie-eating contest was
not for those with a weak stomach. Each heat contained 12 entrants that
raced to finish a apple pie piled high with whipped cream. There were two
winners in the 11 and over category including J.J. Demarino and Brendon
Perry and Libby Eichen won the 11 and under group for the second year in a
row.
Later, local cooks
filled the cafeteria with the fragrance of homemade recipes featuring apples
or pumpkins. Cakes, cookies, pies, and muffins were offered for judges Anne
O’Loughlin, President of the Women’s Club of Ramsey, and Peter Del Vecchio,
Chair of the RFAC. The winners were Basia Cohen for her apple pie and Lisa
Surless for her chocolate chip pumpkin bread. Both recipes will be included
in the Ramsey Centennial Cookbook.
Special thanks to the tireless volunteers
including the Junior Women’s Club, the Women’s Club, Girl Scout Troops 912 &
1341, as well as to Jeanne Jaekel and Helene & Bart Cohen.
